Proposal To Build Pre School
We’re planning to build a Pre School in Unawatuna. This project proposal was given to other NGO’s in order to get funding. This Pre School will be situated at the temple which was already functioning as a Pre School. This was a makeshift shelter for the residents after the tsunami as it is situated on higher ground. The proposed site for the new Pre School is 500M away from the beach, behind the temple and will also function as a community centre for the area.
What’s going on now?
The Project proposal is been redone and the plan for the school has been extended. We have given the project proposal to many and soon as the funding comes through, the construction will begin.

Bridge for Unawatuna
When the tsunami hit Sri Lanka most people didn’t know what to do or how to escape it. The ones that had time to run to higher ground managed to get away, but now most of the bridges that lead to higher ground have been washed away.
Presently, the danger and fear of another wave coming have traumatized the locals in the Unawatuna area.

Right now they have put a log across this stream, but a child or woman could never escape across in an emergency.
This is the path to the only clean well in the area, and by building this bridge, 53 families will benefit as access to the well will be made easy.
Project plan.
We got an estimate from a local contractor for this project and the bridge was completed within 8 days.
Project completed Report
This project was carried out by TRF and Funding by the Polish Humanitarian Organization (PHO Sri Lanka)

The project was completed and the bridge handed over to the Villagers of the areas.

The Rock Concert
The rock concert was “WOW’ as one spectator described it. The thought of so many bands coming together to do something for the children of Sri Lanka was a truly awesome site to see.
With at least ten bands playing, the lack of audience was another topic by it self as it was the lack of publicity given to the show, but the bands did not let this stop them, they rocked the audience with most of them even head banging on the floor.
The best part about the show was that many of the bands that played were performing for the first time to a live audience. The show offered all these new bands a platform to show their talents. Some of the new bands were indeed, truly “WOW”.

Jacob’s Ladder performing
The TRF members were all busy recruiting new members from the audience to join TRF and volunteer for the “Ray of Hope” program. The main men behind the show were Yohan Gunawaradena, Asela Wickremesooriya and Kalpika Abayasekera and these men put their heart and soul in to making this rock show a success. TRF would like to sincerely thank all the bands that played, the sound and lights technicians and all those who helped to make this show a success.
The rock show generated at least Rs.20000/= profit, this sum will go in to the TRF and in to the “Ray of Hope” program.

Tamil classes for volunteers
Since TRF is taking ‘Ray of Hope’ to ALL parts of Sri Lanka, it is important for us to really get to know the children we work with and bond with them. The fact that most of the volunteers lack the ability to converse in Tamil was restricting us from conducting our program properly, we decided to organize Tamil classes twice a week. The lessons are conducted at our HQ at Green Path and taught by a gentleman named Mr. Lawrence. The first class had 15 people attending and we hope to have these classes for as long as they are needed and we are fluent in Tamil!
Film Screenings for Tsunami Affected Areas
Timothy Seneviratne from TRF has been traveling to many camps and tsunami affected areas around the country screening films, and cartoons for children and adults. This project is simple but very effective as it helps most of the children and adults who are affected by the Tsunami to find some form of mental calmness. He has been doing this while volunteering in projects all around the country for many NGOs.

Beach clean up at Unawatuna
TRF and its members conducted a Beach Clean Up Programme, at the Bay of Unawatuna, which is situated in the south of the country, This project was carried out with the help of the locals. Lots of rubble and glass was cleared from the bay. This project was completed in 2 days. 10 sets of masks and figs were purchased to carry out this project and after it was completed, the masks and figs were donated to a local Mr. Ruwan De Silva, who was affected by the Tsunami and had lost all he had. This Equipment will help him in starting out an Equipment Renting Business, thereby generating an income for his day to day living.
Total cost of Project Rs.15, 000/=

"Ray of Hope" - Report
Ray of Hope
The “Ray of Hope” program has been a great hit with the kids and all the NGO’s we’ve been working with and the children loved all the activities and expressed themselves freely. The singing, music and dancing was a big hit with all the children. TRF has conducted this program in five locations with 774 children around Sri Lanka.
Most of the children who have participated on this program have been directly or indirectly affected by the Tsunami, most of them have lost all their belongings, the homes they lived in, the parks the played in, the school they once attended and all most all of them lost a family member or a friend to this disaster.
This program offers them a platform to deal with some of the grief and confusion. Most of the children that have been part of Ray of Hope are still in camps and this program offers them an escape from the surroundings and lets the children go back to being children again.
Given below are the Locations and number of children that have participated in the program.
Pollhena (Matara) -270
Batticaloa – 300
Ahangama pre school -21
Komari -150
Habaraduwa pre school -33
We have been working with three organizations and many more organizations have requested us to conduct similar work shops but the biggest problem being that we are a volunteer based organization and with the lack of volunteers, we have been limited to the number of projects we can undertake per month.
But overall, the project has been a great success and brought many smiles to many lives. TRF will continue to conduct this program all around Sri Lanka with the aim of reaching at least 8000 children or more within the next few months. We would like to thank all those that have supported this program financially, others for giving their precious time by volunteering for this project.
